5 Ways To Provide Cannabis Cultivation Odor Control

Cannabis cultivation businesses are booming in the United States. Furthermore, with that comes a need for odor control solutions. Cannabis requires optimal conditions for growth and to produce high-quality flowers. The problem is, these conditions also create a pungent smell. This article will go over the five ways to provide odor control for cannabis cultivation businesses.

What is Cannabis odor?

Cannabis, like other plants, has an odor that can be earthy or sweet. The aroma comes from terpenes, which are also in other plants. For example, such as pine trees and citrus fruit, but when these compounds build up in your grow rooms or greenhouse, it could lead to an unpleasant odor! Again, they give off chemical compounds called terpenes and terpenoids and are responsible for the distinct smell.

Air Filtration For Cannabis Cultivation Odor Control

The first way to provide cannabis cultivation odor control is with air filtration. Air filters are used for large facilities but are also effective in smaller operations. Air filters claim they are a great way to capture any odors that might escape from your grow room. However, they are not effective when trying to eliminate the cannabis cultivation odor. Placing air filter systems on intake and exhaust vents can help reduce the strength of odors within your facility but does not eliminate the odor. This method works mostly by pushing fresh outside air into your environment while simultaneously pulling out indoor cannabis smell like marijuana smoke or any other intense aromas outside your building. Good for you, bad for your neighbors.

Ozone Generators For Cannabis Cultivation Odor Control

Second, using ozone generators may be an alternative solution. The way ozone generators work is they produce ozone by breaking apart oxygen (O2) molecules into single atoms, which then attach to other oxygen molecules in the air to form ozone (O3). However, the key when considering this option is to use it only when plants are not present inside because of the high levels of ozone produced can damage the plants.

Odor Neutralizers For Cannabis Cultivation Odor Control

Third, Odor Neutralizers are very effective in removing odor because of the strong fragrances they can provide to cover up while neutralizing the cannabis smell. However, we do not recommend using this in any grow rooms because this will affect the flavor of the buds over time. However, you can use this outside of the grow rooms, partially masking the cannabis odor.

Charcoal Filters For Cannabis Cultivation Odor Control

Fourth, if you need to address the smell of cannabis inside or outside your cultivation facility, using charcoal filters can do just that. Charcoal filters work by installing them on exhaust vents or intake fans. These devices work by trapping odors through a process called adsorption, which occurs when molecules attach to the outside of a surface rather than being soaked into it. Charcoal filters can be very effective for small grow rooms. However, when it comes to extensive facilities, it is not as cost effective because many are needed due to the strong cannabis odor that overpowers it when a cultivation facility is managing hundreds to thousands of plants that produce VOCs.

AirROS Purifiers For Cannabis Cultivation Odor Control

The fifth way is using AirROS by SAGE Industrial. It is very effective in eliminating cannabis odor in cultivation facilities. Not only can it neutralize odor, but it can also prevent and reduce pathogens, mold, bacteria, viruses, and yeast.

How AirROS Air and Surface Purifiers Work

AirROS purifiers utilize and create ROS (Reactive Oxygen Species). First, it kills pathogens and odor as it passes through the air purifier. Then, it sanitizes the air that comes out of the purifier and enters the environment, and continues to sanitize all surfaces it contacts. Here is the 2 stage process:

Phase 1- Primary Air Cleaning

Placed within your room’s airflow, air from the environment containing microorganisms enters the purifier’s internal chamber. The reaction chamber creates non-thermal plasma and generates ROS. ROS has comprised of 5 short-lived, highly Reactive Oxygen Species:

  • Atomic oxygen,
  • Singlet oxygen,
  • Hydroxyl radical,
  • Superoxide and
  • Peroxynitrite

These break down carbon-to-carbon bonds that sanitize the air and destroy all bacteria, molds, viruses, and other pathogens as they pass through the reaction chamber.

Phase 2- Secondary Surface & Air Cleaning

Provides Surface sanitation and continued Air sanitation. The purified air now diffused into the environment contains longer lived Reactive Oxygen Species:

  • Gas-phased H2O2- hydrogen peroxide
  • Low concentration levels of O3-ozone

That further sanitizes room air and surfaces. So again, in addition to treating the ambient air as it passes through the reaction chamber, using the H2O2 and O3 diffused into the environment, our units will further sanitize all Surfaces and control Odor, resulting in clean air and surfaces 24/7.

If you have been struggling to get rid of the smell from your cannabis cultivation operation, it may be time for a change. There are many ways to control and eliminate the odors coming from your grow space. However, most methods do not work very well on their own. Air filters can help reduce some smells, while ozone generators and odor neutralizers will temporarily mask them. However, the best way to eliminate odor would be to use an air purifier with surface and air capabilities like our AirROS system which eliminates the odor.
